What is this? A redline is when one artist draws over another artist's work as a teaching tool to point out mistakes and give advice. These redlines were solicited by the original redline owner as a way of learning - and were given freely, no credit required. If you are interested in getting a redline, check out my weekly redline journal (usually posted on friday) to sign up! Rules are listed there.

I hope other artists are able to glean useful information out of this :3

In case you can't read my craptastic handwriting:
(On the first picture)...

Everything is VERY SATURATED.
(1) Lacks all detail
(3) Bad (repeated three times)
(2) This says "LOOK HERE!"

This would be good (where the arrows all point inward)

(To the right of the first picture...)

(1) Depth of field: Your focus point in this picture should be the 2 characters - the field of depth that they reside in should be the clearest & most detailed. Anything closer should be out of focus (blurry) & dark to keep the eyes of your audience from focusing on them. Anything farther away should b eless detailed & often faint (especially trees & mountains). Keeping the characters & their depth the most detailed & clear draws attention to them.
(2) Color: Like depth of field, your characters "zone" should also have the most stunning color & contrast. As we get farhter away, an atmospheric "fog" should bleach out the farther scenery. Notice that the bright red trees you have above the characters distract the eyes away from your focal point.
(3) Line & Composition: It would help if the trees in the background were angled inward as we progresss down the picture - this would help to draw the eye towards the characters, right now they do the opposite, drawing our eyes away.

Contrast: Most of your picture is the same value of gray, just in different hues of red, orange, & yellow. Use your contrast to draw the eye to the characters.

(1) Dark trees box in the focal zone, drawing attention to it.
(2) BKG is bland & washed out, keeping our eyes on the lower half.
(3) most of the picture's contarst is in the focal zone, using light & line to draw the focus.

Color & Saturation ETC : The area around the focal point should have hte most stunning colors & contrasts. Desaturate the rest just a bit to help maintain focus. The same applies to detail.

(To the right of the last picture)...

Forgive the crappy example, but put all of that info together & you can use it as a toool to help trick your audience's eye into looking exactly where you want them to.

I apologize for my craptastic handwirting - it's late >_<

(On the left of the last picture)...

No Interest Zone: Least colorful, least detailed, least contrast.
Middle Zone: bit of color, more detail, draws the eyes down from above.
Focal Zone: most saturation, contrast, & detail. Draws the focus to the characters :3

Sorry it's taken me so long to respond to this! My net at home is REALLY temperamental <__<

But yes omg THANK YOU for this! This is honestly one of my constant problems. I see the forest for the trees and the leaves and the little bugs crawling on the leaves and sort of forget about the forest as a whole >__>. So this was MOST useful, thank you! I've been trying really hard to concentrate on my values after you posted this, so I've definitely learned from it! One of these days I'm totally going back to that piece and editing it to make it a better picture. All these tricky artsy tricks ahaha! Thank you SO so much for taking the time to look over this image for me! I really seriously appreciate it!
