SAI Tutorial - Custom Brushes by DarlingMionette SAI Tutorial - Custom Brushes by DarlingMionette
Wheeeeeee another tutorial :) This time on custom brushes in SAI! <3 I love custom brushes. It was getting so long that I tourniquet'd my custom brush settings off of it >.> But if anyone sees a brush exampled up there that you'd like, just ask and I'll copy the stats for you :)

ENGLISH SAI: [link]
Official Website: [link]

SAI costs approximately $56 USD (5250 Japanese Yen) for a license. Trials last 31 days. Check the exchange rates on your currency - they change daily so it can fluctuate up and down.

[link] <- Custom Brush Suppliment Tutorial. Has all my brush settings.

===========================================
NOTE: This deviation is a little outdated. You can now download "DarlingMionette's SAI Resources" at the bottom of the Custom Brush Supplement.

It is a .zip file of all my brush settings, textures, blank do-it-yourself resources, instructions for creating custom content, and associated start-sai.exe file that lets you register these files to your SAI without editing the .conf files manually :3 All in one convenient place. All of my current brush settings have been updated to match the files in the .zip file, and contain image examples for each. Be sure to read the README's! If you like it, then drop me a +fav on this deviation :D. Thanks!

If you're on the trial, can you make new brushes or do you have to buy it?

I can't say for certain because I don't have the trial version, but from what I've heard from commenters, the trial doesn't save brushes for at least a lot of people, or the new settings just won't show in the menu - most likely because the trial version has some permission locks on the files that keeps people from editing them. I'd certainly recommend buying the program - it's not too expensive and it's a really great little art program.

is this a actual tangible piece of paper, or a computer file?

It's a computer file

then go to the menu in sai and hit "open" and pick the file from a list (I assume it's an image file) if it's a .doc or .pdf you may have to draw the OC seperately and import it into the document though.

When I tried to download the English sai, my avira antivirus kept detecting viruses.
Is it just my avira acting up? :o

you need to have the official SAI off the website (link down there in the description), and then you download the english sai translation pack and put that into it.. then your SAI is in english ^^

reinstall your sai. it's not that you're doing anything wrong (this is a common problem) but sai is pretty unstable and has a habit of letting it's .dll's go corrupt.. which is what helps to save your settings. if you reinstall it'll replace the corrupt .dll's and it'll work just fine :)

Your tutorial is really helpful and making new brushes could become another hobby :D
BUT it is really annoying that my new brushes I create are not safed!! >_<
Maybe I am just overseeing something really really obvious but I'm at my wits end here

I'm pretty sure it changes the sensitivity to the pressure of the pen when using a tablet.. (Just if you haven't checked yet.. :/ )

I can't "Duplicate" an existing brush, and neither does a list appear when I right-click and empty brush slot ;w; Do you have any idea why? ><

Can I ask something?
If I want to make a new pencil with custom settings, the size of the new tool is maximum 10.0?
Is this normal? Or is there even a way making the maximum size 100.0?

If you use Ctrl + Alt, you can drag the brush to any size you want Minimum being 1 px, max being 500 px. Or you can use the brush size buttons. They are under your bursh settings, if you can not see them try making the brush selection box smaller, or minimizing the advanced setting

right click the file and go to properties, make sure it's not read-only. if it's not, then check the folder you have it in and make sure that's not read-only. the error is a permission issue that has to do with your computer's filesystem and the rites you have to access it, not a sai problem specifically :)

Not sure if you've answered this before somewhere but I'm curious what canvas size you use when you do your CG's. I've downloaded and installed and made most of your custom brushes but some of them don't seem to work right for me, like the pressure sensitivity seems to be a bit wonky. They'll draw super light and be practically invisible unless I zoom but if I but a bit of pressure down they become super dark and much wider. I can only imagine that it's because my canvas may be bigger than what you used? I use 3000 x 3000 pixel at 300dpi, but I hardly know what I'm doing when it comes to canvas size so if you've got a better suggestion I'm all for it x3

I genereally use 1500 x 1500 for my canvases at 300dpi that shouldn't make too much of a difference with the brushes themselves. However, different tablets will have different pressure sensitivities, so it may be that you need to adjust the pressure sensitivity of your brushes to match your particular tablet a little better. I have a wacom Intuos 4 M, but depending on brand or even the size/quality of your tablet, it'll have different pressure sensitivity levels than mine does - and may even just be set up differently than mine even if you have the same tablet exactly.

Ahh, that makes sense x3 I have a Wacom Bamboo Capture so it's a teeny tiny tab. Thanks for the response and thanks for the brushes! When I get them to work properly i'm sure they'll look great ^.^
