Duck - Day 2 (just checking in)

Journal Entry: Wed Apr 18, 2012, 2:49 PM
Has anyone ever raised a dove?   On the way home the local elementary school today, I ran across a baby (doesn't have his flight feathers yet) dove sitting on the ground. Unfortunately for this little bird, our neighborhood is full of cats - so hoping to save him from certain death, I gently caught him (boy that was a trial!) and brought him home.  I've got him sitting in an abandoned dove nest in my backyard right now to keep him up and out of harms way - and I'm planning to keep him fed until he can fly off on his own.  I was told by my friend that her mother who used to keep birds often fed baby birds ground hamburger.  Anyone else have any suggestions?  I know I'm in over my head, but I couldn't leave him sitting on the pavement without a chance.

I'm also accepting baby dove names if anyone has a suggestion XD

UPDATE!
Just letting you guys know, the baby dove is still doing fine :3 thank you for all your messages and concern over the little guy - I sincerely appreciate all the website links you guys sent me :D  With your help I was able to figure out what he ate, and ran down to the local pet store and picked him up some baby-dove-seeds that he's supposed to like. He's still up in his temporary tree-home with some food and a small bowl of water (cause apparently doves like to take sips of water out of inch-deep puddles - which i did not know until someone sent me the information XD) It's a warm night (I still have my AC on at 11:30 pm) here with a very light breeze, and he should be just fine till morning.  I've taken the liberty to TEMPORARILY nickname him "Duck". Yes, I realize he isn't a duck. LOL I just like watching people's faces when I call him duck.  I've actually identified him as a fledgling (or juvenile) White-Winged Dove. (link if you want to see what he'll be: www.oiseaux-birds.com/card-whi…)  He's got his initial flight feathers in his wings, but his tail is still really short - and he's a sloppy flyer (he tried to flutter along when I caught him, but he couldn't get up off the ground). I'm hoping I can keep him healthy long enough that he'll finish growing and head off on his own :3  But for now, he's safe in my fenced back yard, fed, watered, and warm.  I'll check in on him again tomorrow morning and let you guys know how he's doing periodically.

DAY 2 Afternoon UPDATE
Duck's still doing fine :3  He ate some seeds and drank a bunch of water, and I replaced both. This afternoon I went back to check on him again and his water had fallen out of the tree and Duck was no where to be found. It took a few minutes, but I tracked him down (he had gotten out of the tree and was running around my backyard... welll.. like a duck. I put him back in the tree to keep away from the cats.  He's able to fly a little now - at least 2 or 3 feet, but he doesn't get far.  I bet by next week he'll be on his way back to the park with the other birds where he belongs :3 Until then, he's cozy living in my tree and well pampered.

LoL, there's nothing quite like taking care of birds. ^^ Me and my sister once took care of a crow for about a year; it had broken its wing and couldn't fly anymore. It was so much fun giving him little sparkly gifts to hoard. :meow:

^^ He's doing fine this morning, I went out and checked him and he's sitting up his lil tree and ate a bunch of the seed I put out last night, so I threw some more up there and he just sorta looked at me like "i can't figure out what you are... you're not a cat.... big bird maybe?" lol

so far so good XD he stayed in the tree I put him in, and I ran out and picked him up some seeds that baby doves are supposed to love - I also put him out a small cup of water in his tree (cause I looked it up and they only drink out of inch-deep pools of water) etc etc. I've checked on him periodically over the last few hours and he's doing okay :3 right now I've resorted to calling him "duck" just to piss off all my friends/family who keep trying to come up with names. LOL they're all *flails* "it's not a duck!" which just makes it funnier XD I'll check on him again in the morning and make sure he's still up in the tree and hasn't jumped out -_- and make sure he's got plenty of food and stuff. I've identified him as a fledgling white-winged dove :3

There are a lot of good resources online, but I've found birds to be very delicate and when I find them injured or abandoned, I take them to a wildlife rehabilitation clinic. But if you decide to tackle this on your own, bravo! :D

problem is there aren't a lot of rehabilitation places out here in the middle of the desert XD otherwise that would have been my first choice

Yikes! Then definitely look online. That was how I managed to raise four baby squirrels when my husband brought them home from work. They cut a tree down and killed the mom, and only discovered the nest when they went to dispose of the tree. I don't know what I would have done without the Internet!

I wish you all the best of luck, hon. ... Post photos! :D

Oh and whenever we find and raise baby birds I name them after a scientist. We had

Alberta (Albert Enstine)- She was a baby woodpecker
Gregor Mendel- A mentally retarded robin (named after the guy who did that thing with the pea plants)
David (after my favorite science teacher)- A baby Tree Swallow that was pushed from his nest and abandoned.

Name him after someone famous? :D

Keep him warm.
You can find meal worms at a pet store(most likely) and i heard ground hamburger works.
You should make him a new nest. Birds carry nasty bugs. If the old nest had a bird with something that could be harmful to the baby, well...you know how that ends.

Before anything else baby birds need heat, they don't need much because they usually are kept nice and toasty by their brothers and sisters.
I would feed him mealworms mixed with egg-white (you can get mealworms at a local pet store if they sell birds and reptiles)
I'll look it up in my books tomorrow (I'm studying animal care and we had a class about how to take care of abandoned baby animals a couple of weeks ago) and I'll get back to you when I find out what would be the best for your little bird baby.
Best of luck with taking care of him because it can sure be a handful!

If it's still that young, they have special formulas for it. Petsmart sells doves, so there's a good chance they have things...

I took care of baby birds (I think they were some kind of blackbird) during summer camp once, their mom flew away and never returned. We fed them mushroom soup through a straw. Maybe yours is older than that though, our birds had only just hatched, and their eyes weren't open yet.

I don't know whether or not this was the right was the right way of taking care of them, though, because they tragically met their death when one of the camp's janitors was cleaning out the room we'd left them in and threw the box we were keeping them in, bundled up in towels, in the garbage. I still can't believe he wouldn't have heard them, they were constantly chirping.

this one is a fledgling still but it shouldnt be too long before it can fly - it attempted to and seemed to have nearly all it's adult wing feathers - but it still doesn't have all it's tail feathers yet -_- so it sort of "fluttered" around the ground for the most part. I think he's got a good chance if I can keep him fed until they grow in. Thank you for the info!
